Watching her in the morning pass by, while smiling or laughing had come to be the one constant in his life. And he depended on it. Whenever he awoke somewhere alien and alone it was the thought that once he was inside his apartment and went to sleep he would wake up in his bed again and he would see her in the morning. She always walking to work with a smile or a friendly inviting face.
So when one day they had passed her in the mornings like always, and he had seen her face in a sad frown, her eyes red and puffy he had called out to her, and gotten Eddy to stop the car at once.
He caught up to her, and found her waiting for him trying to look anywhere but his face. He had slowly extended his arm to her and enveloped her in a hug. The moment his arms were around her, hers came up and held onto his shirt, and he knew instantly that it had been exactly what she needed.
She had not spoken, but he knew instantly what had happened even without her saying anything. He had watched her for so long, and memorized every part of her that the lack of a certain ring was something he instantly spotted.
He had held her for the longest time it seemed, until she retreated and shyly looked away with a small ‘thank you’ he barely heard. He smiled down at the girl he had always watched and offered her a ride. She looked up at the ambulance still waiting by the street with a rather amused and fondly watching Eddy inside and smiled at him, before shaking her head ‘no thank you’.
There were so many things he could have said in that moment, probably should have said but only managed to say “If you need anything… you know where to find me!” He hoped that the expression on his face was one of earnest sincerity and not one of absolute desperation for her to contact him. Because in a way he felt that this now, whatever it was, was his chance for them to get closer.
Before she left, she squeezed his arm that was still resting on her shoulder and smiled a teary smile and nodded. He returned to a knowingly smirking Eddy and sat in his seat while looking out of the window again. This time he could feel his muscles going from a rigid state to one of absolute exasion. He had been pretty tense he admitted to himself. But it had been worth it.
Not only had he talked to her, and held her in his arms, no he had been able to comfort her in her time of need. And he knew that he had been the one to make her feel better if only for some time.
And when they drove on, he had the feeling that the next time an ambulance would cross her path she might look up this time. At that thought a smile appeared on his face, and he couldn’t wait for tomorrow morning to come so that he could watch her again while they passed by her.
Ok, so I am a sucker for happy endings… And who ever said that Chloe would be happy with
